Description du catalogue
’21 Place Vendôme, Paris’ labelled, of midnight blue grosgrain moiré silk, embroidered in ivory corded silk, the flowers with sequin and pearl bead centres, the blossoms near the hem hand-painted in pink, lined in black silk, with stand collar, lightly-padded shoulders, hook and eye fastenings, chest 81cm, 32in
The fashion sketch is reproduced courtesy of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs - Schiaparelli sketches Volume 13, plate 46.The sketch indicates that the jacket was originally intended to be worn with a matching midnight blue bias-cut dress with pointed front collar and a towering hat with curved, undulating brim.
The floral embroidery is reminiscent of that found on men’s court waistcoats of the late 18th century, but with the scale boldly enlarged to suit the size and shape of this jacket.
