Versace used metal mesh in his designs from the 1980s onwards. These progressed from boxy rectangular shapes in the early collections to neo-classical drapery by the 1990s, suggestive of female gladiators. This fine metal mesh produced a molten, almost wet-look effect, which in combination with silver or gold tones produced the glamorous ’bling’ effect for which he was renowned.
