Description du catalogue
A rare Paul Poiret silk afternoon ensemble, 1922-25
labelled, comprising: dress of pleated ivory silk charmeuse, with Mughal-inspired pink brocaded silk/wool integral waistcoat with raisedwork metallic thread rosettes to imitate frogging and tassels, curved waist pockets edged in gold and ivory braid, the pleated skirt with brocaded edged hem attached to silk chemise under-bodice, double-layered frilled chiffon to neckline; the matching cape with shaped ogival pink brocade panel to back, bust approx 97cm, 38in (2)
Provenance: The Sandy Schreier Collection
For Summer 1922 Harper’s Bazaar April 1922 reviewed Poiret’s collection which sounds very similar to this ensemble:
‘The general line is long with the waist placed low. Many bodices follow closely the contours of the figure and are then mounted on a very full gathered skirt, without so much as a suggestion of a girdle…The Egptian inspiration, the colourful Russian and Byzantine, and the mysterious Hindu influence are all felt in this new collection of Poiret’s. The use of two contrasting materials is seen again and again in this collection. One material is plain and the other vividly figured. In the afternoon where two colours … and other odd combinations are used the idea of contrasting materials is more strikingly developed.’
