 -25\n\nA rare Paul Poiret silk afternoon ensemble\, 1922-25\n\nlabelled\,
 comprising: dress of pleated ivory silk charmeuse\, with Mughal-inspired p
 ink brocaded silk/wool integral waistcoat with raisedwork metallic thread
 rosettes to imitate frogging and tassels\, curved waist pockets edged in g
 old and ivory braid\, the pleated skirt with brocaded edged hem attached t
 o silk chemise under-bodice\, double-layered frilled chiffon to neckline\;
  the matching cape with shaped ogival pink brocade panel to back\, bust ap
 prox 97cm\, 38in (2)\n\nProvenance: The Sandy Schreier Collection\n\nFor S
 ummer 1922 Harper’s Bazaar April 1922 reviewed Poiret’s collection whi
 ch sounds very similar to this ensemble:\n\n‘The general line is long wi
 th the waist placed low. Many bodices follow closely the contours of the f
 igure and are then mounted on a very full gathered skirt\, without so much
  as a suggestion of a girdle…The Egptian inspiration\, the colourful Rus
 sian and Byzantine\, and the mysterious Hindu influence are all felt in th
 is new collection of Poiret’s. The use of two contrasting materials is s
 een again and again in this collection. One material is plain and the othe
 r vividly figured. In the afternoon where two colours … and other odd co
 mbinations are used the idea of contrasting materials is more strikingly d
 eveloped.’\n\nShare this lot:
