Held at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, the 2012 Ryder Cup—dubbed the “Miracle at Medinah”—stands as a defining moment of teamwork, resilience, and competitive spirit on the world stage. The 2012 Ryder Cup saw Europe fall as far as 10-4 down on Saturday before Luke Donald and Sergio García added a much needed point for Europe and Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter staged a comeback from down two with six to play for Europe’s sixth point, including an incredible display of nerves by Ian Poulter, who sank five consecutive birdie putts to secure Europe’s sixth point and keep hopes, however slim, alive for Sunday. Those hopes came true. Entering the final day trailing the United States 10–6, Europe mounted a stunning Sunday comeback, winning 8½ of the 12 singles matches to clinch an improbable 14½–13½ victory and retain the Ryder Cup. Under the leadership of captain Paul Azinger, the American team embraced a bold new approach built on unity and a strategic “pod” system. Designed to bolster team cohesion and unity, Azinger was inspired by a program detailing the training of Navy SEALs and by the conclusion that Team Europe gravitated to pods on its own due to the various nationalities and languages amongst its roster.
