In the 1970s, the Bonacina 1889 company undertook a series of collaborations with Gae Aulenti and Renzo Mongiardino, working from models preserved in the firm’s Archivio storico. Their approach consisted in adapting existing pieces to contemporary uses while preserving the rattan bending and weaving techniques characteristic of the house. Gae Aulenti (1927–2012) reworked several archival seats, including the “1925/1” model and its outdoor version “1925/1 Out”, which she redesigned in 1979 by adjusting their proportions and structure. She also developed the “Serra/F” series, in which the “Serra F Sofa” translates a characteristic Bonacina rattan structure into a sofa form. At the same time, Renzo Mongiardino (1916–1998) worked closely with Mario Bonacina to adapt other historical models to the needs of specific projects. Their collaboration led in particular to the creation of the “Brando Bicolor” model (1975). These pieces appear in several notable interiors designed by Mongiardino, including the fashion designer Valentino Garavani’s dining room, Paola Zanussi’s living room, and that of Princess Irene Galitzine in Rome (L. Verchère, Renzo Mongiardino, Décors et Fantasmagorie, Paris, 2013, pp. 156–157, 163, 176–177).

The watch will be shipped with a Sotheby’s branded calf leather strap. The reference 3734 is a classic TV-shaped wristwatch by Patek Philippe from the 1980s and a collectable piece in its own right. What makes this particular example stand out is that it carries the signature of Hafez Al-Assad on the dial. It is unclear if the watch was a special order for the then president of Syria personally, or if it was intended as a gift on his behalf. What we know is that the Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirms the signature as it states ’white matte dial, 11 applied sword shaped indexes in yellow gold, government signature’. According to our research it is only the second known example with this dial, the first one having been auction in this room in 2020. Other brands such as Rolex have been known to make special dials with Assad-signatures, though they normally read ’Leader Hafez Al-Assa’ as opposed to the present example which simply states ’Hafez Al-Assad.’ The present lot has retained both signatures on the dial in attractive condition, clear hallmarks on its case back, and is offered with its Ellipse buckle.

Since then, it has become a staple of the brands movement architecture and the three golden bridge are a signature house style that is reserved for its most special timepieces. While the first ‘modern’ three-bridge tourbillion from the brand dates to 1986, our present example dates to circa 1990. Presented in skeletonized form with excellent decoration on the three golden bridges, this limited edition is a testament to all the brand is capable of and is boldly modern, while respecting the heritage of the brands founder. With the present piece, the Trois ponts d’or and the tourbillon are only visible through the sapphire display back. From the front, only the classic chronograph can be noticed, as well as the discreet indication of the tourbillon, evoking the mechanical marvel hidden underneath.

Though not visible through the solid caseback, the movement is beautifully decorated with fausses côtes, perlage and a solid 21k gold rotor. The off-white dial gives the watch a subdued elegance as opposed to bright white. The case and buckle are made of platinum and paired with the diamond-set dial really elevates this watch above its contemporaries. Released in 2017, “The Ten” was one of the fastest and most ambitious collaborations Nike has ever produced, taking about ten months from ideation to release. The set is divided into two different design categories, named “REVEALING” and “GHOSTING”. The “REVEALING” includes the Air Jordan 1, Nike Air Max 90, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air VaporMax, and Nike Blazer Mid. These pairs are meant to feel “accessible”, using design techniques to look hand-cut, open-sourced, and rebuilt.
