Peter Marino | Ateliers Saint Jacques Peter Marino (b. 1949) & Ateliers Saint-Jacques a set of three silvered and gilt-bronze boxes, 2012–2019 one signed with an amati-style hammered design, dated 2019, numbered 38/50; one signed with a rocky design centered by a cylinder, dated 2014, numbered 45/250; the third signed with a geometric hammered design, dated 2019, numbered 12/50, the set bears the founder’s mark of Ateliers Saint-Jacques (3) Long. de 8 à 10 cm ; Length from 3 1/8 in to 4 in In 2009, Peter Marino became fascinated by the discovery of a ship dating back to 350 BC, found off the Turkish coast on the route from Greece to Italy, containing a treasure of bronze works more than 2,000 years old. Captivated by the ability of this material to withstand the passage of time, he began working with bronze, blending architecture and ornamentation to create sculpted boxes in cast bronze. Each of these pieces can take up to a year to complete and reflects Marino’s deep attachment to ancient bronze-working traditions. The boxes are entirely handcrafted at the Ateliers Saint-Jacques, at the heart of our metalworking studio. Each series draws its inspiration from organic forms and diverse cultural references, and stands out through a variety of finishes and patination techniques.

His arrival marked a major turning point: he brought to Dior a dramatic, theatrical, and romantic energy while honoring the brand’s classical heritage. Galliano is distinguished by his extravagant, narrative-driven style. His runway shows—true spectacles—blend historical references, literary and cultural influences, and the traditional craftsmanship of haute couture: corsetry, embroidery, draping, and pleating. The silhouettes he created celebrated romanticism, femininity, and sophistication, redefining Dior’s image for an international clientele and a new generation of fashion enthusiasts. During his tenure, he produced iconic collections inspired by history (notably collections influenced by Marie Antoinette or paying homage to the East and Japan) and by mythology, while collaborating with renowned photographers and artists to elevate the presentation of the collections (Helmut Newton, Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz). His work at Dior highlights the importance of theatre and poetry in haute couture, helping to establish Dior as a symbol of innovation and prestige in contemporary fashion.

She was part of the social and glamorous circle surrounding Hubert de Givenchy, the internationally renowned couturier, and collaborator and friend of Audrey Hepburn. This proximity was reflected in her attendance at events, openings, and soirées hosted by the house of Givenchy, highlighting the influence of fashion and cinema circles on the cultural and artistic life of the time. Their relationship illustrates the intimacy between the worlds of cinema and haute couture during the 1950s to 1970s. Hubert de Givenchy had the custom of sending his greetings by annotating his fashion sketches.

This dinner gathered a select circle of guests, connected to the luxury world or close to the designer, sometimes chosen for being born in March—hence the symbolic idea of the “fish” (the Pisces zodiac sign). Lagerfeld enjoyed organizing highly staged dinners, with the help of Françoise Dumas also form the Pisces sign, also with carefully curated decorations, sometimes inspired by the marine world, combining refinement, theatricality, and the art of living. The hôtel particulier at 51 Rue de l’Université, the Pozzo di Borgo residence in Paris, was for nearly three decades the home and reception venue of Karl Lagerfeld. Known for his taste for luxury and his theatrical flair, Lagerfeld hosted sumptuous private dinners there, bringing together figures from the worlds of fashion, cinema, and high society. These evenings were famed for their glamorous and spectacular atmosphere: the richly decorated salons, with wood paneling, gilding, and thick carpets, created a palatial setting that elevated each reception. Amanda Harlech, a close collaborator of Lagerfeld, recalled that “the party buzzed around him,” with the designer seated at his round table in a Louis XV armchair, while “guests fluttered like butterflies around the flame of his presence.” Within this social sphere, Lagerfeld maintained a friendly relationship with Doris Brynner, an iconic figure in design and the luxury world. They were photographed together on numerous occasions: during Fashion Weeks, particularly Dior shows; at concerts by tenor Plácido Domingo; and at the opening of Yul Brynner’s A Photographic Journey at Galerie Du Passage in Paris. This camaraderie reflected their shared presence in the Parisian social and artistic scene, where fashion, music, and art intersected.
