Marie Laurencin Dressing Gown
French, 1930s/40s
Hand sewn, kimono style, rayon printed with floral and fruit pattern in shades of blue, grape, peach and citrus, curved patch pockets, blue lining, self sash with tassels, seams all hand sewn, signed on selvages at left seam, most visible at pocket seam: Marie Laurencin.
Excellent condition, minor color transfer from grape onto white.
The artist Marie Laurencin (1885-1956), best known for her portraiture of fashionable society women, worked within the artistic circle that included the artists Matisse, Picasso, Braque, the designer Paul Poiret and the literary critique Apollinaire. She also had a close friendship with Poiret’s, sister, Nicole Groualt. In addition to her painting, she also designed costumes for Diaghilev and decorative items including textiles.
