Queen Marie of Rumania’s bed linen, circa 1893, comprising: top sheet with elaborate whitework embroidery of rose briars and central ’Marie’, another similar with cutwork trellis, both edged in flounces of bobbin lace; and two pairs of rectangular pillowcases with whiteworked names, one pair inset with Valenciennes lace, (242 by 340 long, 8ft by 11ft 2in, (6)

Queen Marie (1869-1937)was the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria and Czar Nicholas I of Russia. She married King Ferdinand of Rumania in 1893. She was noted for her beauty and idolised by her people. During W.W.1 she devoted herself to the Red Cross and worked tirelessly to support her stricken people driven into exile by the ’Hun’.
