This White Set 1 Away jersey was worn by Connor McDavid in his third career game, when the Edmonton Oilers took on the Dallas Stars on October 13, 2015. McDavid scored his first career goal in the game, which was also his first career point. The Oilers lost 4-2.
This jersey was also worn by McDavid in his second career game, when the Oilers took on the Nashville Predators on October 10, 2015. The Oilers lost 2-0.
When Connor McDavid was drafted with the first overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, McDavid was joining an Edmonton Oilers team that had seen better days. Far beyond the glory days of Wayne Gretzky, Oilers fans had not seen a playoff game since 2006, when the Oilers lost a heartbreaking seven game Stanley Cup Final after recovering from a 3-1 deficit to force a seventh game.
Then came the 2015 Draft Lottery. Entering the evening, the Oilers had an 11.5 percent chance at landing the number one overall pick. Everyone knew that there was only one player for the number one pick. That year’s class had a clear consensus first overall pick with the skills to become a franchise cornerstone: Connor McDavid.
McDavid had a stellar youth career. McDavid was granted Exceptional Player Status by Hockey Canada after being named Player of the Year in the Greater Toronto Hockey League and winner of the Tim Adams Memorial Trophy. Drafted first overall by the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, McDavid’s time in the OHL was punctuated by his incredible final season, in which he scored 120 points and received the Red Tilson Trophy, Wayne Gretzky 99 Award, and CHL Player of the Year Award. Meanwhile, McDavid also represented Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Under 18 Championships and the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, leading his team to gold medals in both events. Everyone knew that the rights to draft him would be the main prize of the 2015 NHL lottery.
On April 18, 2015, as the hockey world looked on, the Edmonton Oilers defied the odds and won the first overall pick. The front office was elated. Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish said “I can’t tell you how exciting it is for us to win this lottery…Any team would be just over the moon about winning the lottery. We’re the same. It’s a game-changer."
Despite protests by assistant general manager Bill Scott that McDavid was not their guaranteed first pick, the Oilers had their man. Described as a “craftsman with the puck,” commentators touted his incredible vision, sense of timing, and anticipation that went along with “top-end” speed, with many calling him a generational talent and the best prospect since Sidney Crosby. Two months later, they made it official. The Oilers faithful had already begun celebrating, with unofficial jerseys flooding Edmonton in the weeks before McDavid’s name was called.
McDavid did not disappoint. McDavid showed flashes of brilliance in his first game against the St. Louis Blues, and although he did not record a point his coach was impressed that as the game progressed, McDavid got better. In McDavid’s second game, which this jersey is matched to, McDavid played 18 and ½ minutes and registered two shots on goal against yet another strong defensive team, the Nashville Predators. The NHL world eagerly awaited the young prodigy’s first goal.
The breakthrough came in McDavid’s third game. Against the Dallas Stars in the second period, McDavid deflected a shot by teammate Andrej Sekera and tipped in the first goal of his career to tie the game 2-2 in this jersey. Although the Oilers lost, McDavid acknowledged that it was a day that he would remember for the rest of his life.
That goal kicked off an NHL career that many Oilers fans will remember for the rest of theirs. Despite suffering a broken clavicle in just his 13th game that would keep him out for three months, McDavid still finished the season with 48 points, was named to the All-Rookie Team, and was a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy.
His showing in his rookie season earned him the nod as team captain, making him the youngest in NHL history. He rewarded the Oilers’ faith by leading the team out of its decade-long playoff drought while earning MVP honors, the Ted Lindsay Award, and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team. He also became the second youngest player to win the Art Ross Trophy for leading scorer. In the years since, McDavid has made more history, becoming only the second player in NHL history to win the MVP award unanimously in 2021, and on April 8, 2023, McDavid became the first player in 27 years to record 150 points in a single season. That same season, McDavid became the 23rd player in NHL history to score 60 goals in a single season. McDavid became the 99th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points on November 14, 2024.
McDavid’s success has also bred team success. The Oilers have made every Stanley Cup Playoffs since the 2019-20 season, and they have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in each of the past two seasons.
At the age of 28, having won three MVPs, five Art Ross Trophies, four Ted Lindsay Awards for outstanding player, one Maurice Richard Trophy for leading goal scorer in 2022-23, and the Connor Smythe Trophy for most valuable player of his team in 2023-24 while being named to an NHL All-Star team seven times, a Stanley Cup is set firmly in McDavid’s sights. The only question is: how much more greatness will we get to witness as he chases one. Do not miss your chance to own this incredible piece of hockey history that bore witness to the first goal ever scored by McDavid on his journey to historic heights.
