Description du catalogue

Paul Poiret’s woven Syrian Aba robe, 1910-20

woven in dramatic dark brown and silver stripes and bands, with fine gold thread embroidered band to neck and front chest closure edges, the back panels with finely woven blue silk stylised architectural motifs

Provenance: Beaussant Lefevre Auction, 14 February 2008, lot 88 The collection taken from the personal wardrobe of Denise Boulet-Poiret, via her grandson Coilin Poiret and thence by descent through the family. It has been in the same private collection since the 2008 auction.

Bibliography: Yvonne Deslandres, ’Poiret’ Thanes & Hudsoin 1986, this robe is illustrated full page -164. Deslandres comments that this Aba robe is redolent of the coat shown on the 1924 film poster for ’Inhumaine’ for which Poiret designed the costumes.
