Description du catalogue
A fine Paul Poiret beaded evening dress, 1913
labelled and dated October 1913, of Directoire line, the black tulle lavishly worked with cascading strands of metallic black beads, the neckline, and hem further embellished with jet-like faceted stones, the loose uncorseted raised empire-line waist demarcated by a band of jet-like bugle beads, the sleeves with ladder-like beaded bands to reveal the upper arms, the bodice and skirt with pale salmon-pink beige satin lining, the hem with extra lining of beige wool to support the beadwork and help produce the desired columnar line, bust approx 91cm 36in
This Directoire line evening dress with its loose uncorseted bodice, raised waistline and slim cylindrical skirt (which revealed the ankles) - presaged the silhouette which was to dominate during the 1920s.
1920’s shape.
The dress has been in same collection for nearly 30 years. The colour photo shows the dress displayed in the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, for the Poiret and Fortuny Exhibition of 31.1.2009.
